Smart growth helps clean air and water, cuts energy consumption, stretches water resources farther, and promotes healthier living. By grouping homes closer together, denser development also consumers less land, leaving more land for parks, surrounding farms and open spaces, and other greenspaces. When homes, shops, offices, and other job sites are closer together, we all drive less, reducing air pollution and saving dollars. Compact developments – from homes on lots that are sized to be neighborhood friendly to townhouses and condominiums – generally require less water and often use less energy for heating and cooling. Finally, livable communities are walkable, bike-friendly communities with a variety of destinations – shops, parks, public squares, and transit stops – with easy reach, giving residents plenty of reasons and opportunities to enjoy walking and biking.
